Custody disputes are very contentious in some instances, and the emotional toll is very overwhelming. For some parents, these challenges are so great that they lose the will to stand up for themselves and fight for their rights in the courtroom. Some parents also give up as a result of threats coming from their former partner, which is particularly frustrating but happens all too often. Moreover, giving up often hurts a child as well as his or her parent, and it is imperative to stay focused in the wake of a child custody dispute.

Parents give up for different reasons. Some are overwhelmed as a result of other hardships they are facing in life, such as problems in their career or a health crisis that drains their time, energy and financial resources. Other parents are simply unfamiliar with the legal system and cannot tolerate dealing with these issues in the courtroom. Some have little confidence in their ability to secure a more favorable outcome and decide to let the case run its course with little intervention or effort. This is a disastrous error that often brings challenges for years to come, especially in terms of one’s relationship with their child.

Sometimes, it is hard to avoid negative feelings and take a firm stance during a custody dispute. However, familiarizing one’s self with legal options and some of the strategies that are on the table is a smart move, especially with the custody of a child at stake.
